Improving Vegetation

How we Help the Gleeson Wetlands

The Clare Lions Club resolved to become involved in weed control and improving the Gleeson Wetlands vegetation in early June 2014.  Anyone familiar with the wetlands as it is now would hardly recognise it as it was then – see https://comagecontra.net/LGWHistory.html

In 2015 the wetlands won both the Premier’s Natural Environment Award and the Premier’s Award – see https://comagecontra.net/LionsGW.html#Awards

Over the years there have been a few setbacks, off-target weed spraying at one time, a major flood that floated away a lot of our carefully placed mulch and washed out a ford in 2016 – see https://comagecontra.net/LionsGW.html#Flood_damage_2016

If you want to see it as it is, go and have a look, the walk will do you good.  (For photos taken in recent years have a look at https://ramblingsdc.net/LionsGW.html#Photos_2017.  There is also a Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/ClareGleesonWetlands).

But now many of the shrubs and trees have reached maturity; indeed some of the shorter lived ones such as many of the Golden Wattles have died of old age.  Others, such as the slow growing Callitris (native cypress pines) are still small and the very slow growing Xanthorrhoea (yaccas) are still tiny.

A number of Lions have attended working bees, several have been consistent in their commitment, and two non-Lions have provided many hours of work over periods of several months. We could always use more workers at the wetlands, Lions or others.
